Concrete Work

Concrete is the foundation of everything we build. Every pour starts below the surface — with a properly excavated, compacted, and graded base that carries the load and moves water away from your home. It is the part nobody sees, and it is the reason our flatwork is still flat a decade later.

Maryland punishes shortcuts. Freeze-thaw cycles find every weak joint, every under-cured slab, and every driveway poured too thin. We spec the right mix, place control joints where the slab actually wants to crack, and finish and cure to a schedule instead of a clock — so surfaces resist scaling, spalling, and random cracking through Mid-Atlantic winters.

From a single walkway to a full driveway replacement or a structural slab for a new addition, the work is done by our own crew, on our own schedule, with one person accountable from layout to final broom pass.

02 — Hand-fit joints. Real stone. Zero filler.

Natural Stone Work

Natural stone is where craft shows. Every piece is a different size, a different thickness, and a different color — and fitting them into a surface that reads as one continuous plane is a skill you only get from twenty years of doing it by hand.

We work in full-range bluestone, irregular flagstone, tumbled and split-face veneer, and quarried wall stone. Patios are laid on a properly built base with tight, hand-cut joints. Walls are built with real batter and drainage behind them, not stacked and hoped for. Veneer is set over a code-correct moisture assembly so the wall behind it stays dry.

The result is stonework that looks like it grew out of the property — and holds its line long after the trend that inspired it has passed.

03 — The hardscape is half the design. This is the other half.

Landscape Design & Installation

A patio in the middle of a bare yard is a slab. What makes it feel finished is everything around it — the grade, the beds, the planting that softens the stone, and the way the whole thing reads from the back door on a Saturday morning.

We design and install the landscape alongside the hardscape, because they are one project. Site planning and grading, bed layout and edging, soil prep and plantings chosen for Mid-Atlantic conditions, mulch and finish work — all sequenced so the planting goes in after the heavy work is done, not before it gets trampled.

Because the same team designs and builds, the plan that gets drawn is the plan that gets built — no handoff, no finger-pointing, and no surprises at the end.

04 — Patios, walls, fire and the space that ties them together.

Hardscaping

Hardscaping is where an ordinary back yard turns into somewhere you actually spend your evenings. Pavers and walls, a fire feature, a level terrace where there used to be a slope — the elements are simple. Making them work together on a real, sloping, awkward Maryland lot is the job.

Every hardscape we build starts with base prep. Excavation to the right depth, compacted aggregate in lifts, and edge restraint at every perimeter — the reason a paver patio still reads dead-flat five winters in, instead of dipping and heaving.

Retaining walls get engineered drainage, geogrid where the height calls for it, and a base course set below grade. Fire features get proper clearances and non-spalling firebrick. The details you cannot see are the ones that decide how long the ones you can see will last.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Built to Last. Designed to Stand Out.

Straight answers, no runaround. Anything not covered here? Call (443) 839-7340 — we answer 24 hours a day.

Do you handle both residential and commercial projects?

Yes. We work on single-family homes, investment and rental properties, HOAs, and commercial sites across the greater Baltimore area — from a homeowner's back patio to commercial walkways, loading pads and property-wide hardscape.

Do you work with both concrete and natural stone?

Both, and that is deliberate. Concrete and natural stone are our two core crafts, so we can recommend whichever suits your space, your budget and your home — instead of steering you toward the one trade we happen to run.

What's your service area?

We are based at 202 Duke of Kent Ln, Hunt Valley, MD 21030 and serve Hunt Valley and the greater Baltimore metro — including Cockeysville, Timonium, Towson, Lutherville, Sparks, Monkton, Phoenix and the wider Baltimore County, Harford County, Carroll County area.

How long does a typical patio or driveway take?

Most residential driveways and patios run three to five working days on site, depending on size, access, demolition and how much grading the lot needs. Larger outdoor-living builds combining patio, walls and a fire feature typically run one to three weeks. You get a realistic schedule in writing with your quote — not an optimistic one.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. HJ Construction & Landscape Design LLC is a licensed and insured Maryland business. We are happy to provide current documentation before work begins.

Do you provide free quotes?

Always. Every quote starts with an on-site walk-through so we can look at grade, drainage and access before quoting a number — then you get a free, written, no-obligation proposal. We are reachable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Still deciding?

Free on-site walk-throughs are exactly that — free. We look at your grade, drainage and access, tell you what the space actually needs, and leave you with a written number. No pressure, no obligation.
